Bank Holiday Blinder - Donington GP

matthewellisracing

The Classic Sports Car Club arrived at Donington GP for August bank holiday.

Once again Matthew and team competing in the Future Classic series; a competitive grid saw the top 5 cars include a TVR tuscan challenge, Mazda RX7 turbo, Porsche 911 RSR and two Talbot Sunbeam Lotus's including the Ellis car.

The entire day was a wash out; rainout almost continuously! However after such a strong performance at Brands Hatch in the rain this wasn't to deter the team.

Qualifying was awfully wet, with standing water and rivers along the back straight; once again opting to use the semi-slicks that worked at Brands Hatch Matthew put the car in third overall against two very well driven cars on proper wets.

Due to the victory at Brands Hatch, Matthew also had to over come a 30 second success penalty to be taken in the pitstop.

Martyn started the race and thought hard; in the tough conditions he dropped to 6th in a tight battle for 5th behind a 944 turbo.

Pitstop and penalty taken, Matthew returned to the circuit in 6th and with a lot of ground to make up.

Best lap after best lap and some

super consistency through traffic; he picked of the father and son pairing in the 944 turbo, then the 911 RSR for fourth. Matthew then reduced the gap to Geoff Beale's sister Talbot Sunbeam Lotus to that of a few seconds when crossing the line to start the last lap. Lights a blaze, and pressure applied. Geoff made an error into the Melbourne Loop. Matthew threaded his way through the gap to secure a very popular and hard thought 3rd place overall!
